Learn by doing

At the Rory Z Hypnosis Academy, we believe that hypnosis courses and hypnotherapy training should be flexible and practical. Not just ‘script’ and theory-based!

Not all hypnosis training is created equal. Unfortunately, there are many hypnosis courses and trainers out there who under-deliver! Some teach hypnosis without giving students the opportunity to practice. Others don’t back up hypnosis practice with the all-important theory. In fact, there are some trainers who don’t have any real-world experience, and can’t even do hypnosis themselves without relying on a script!

When you learn hypnosis and hypnotherapy with the Rory Z Hypnosis Academy, not only do you benefit from Rory’s years of experience hypnotising and helping people, you will also get a comprehensive grounding in theory and practice! You will learn how and why hypnosis and hypnotherapy works, as well as developing the confidence to get practicing right away! Rory gets my vote! Again
My second course with Rory. When you look around the room of your fellow students, you have to ask yourself why do so many qualified Hypnotherapists attend his courses? For me its because he blends proven techniques with fun. His teaching style is clear and you get plenty of practice on the day in a safe environment. Will I go back for more? For sure! And if you cant get to his courses then buy some of his books - they are easy to follow and a great way to start

Never a dull moment.
I had the opportunity to study with Rory while he was in the United States. Whilst he teaches the techniques thoroughly with a warm sense of humor. By the end of the day, following loads of practice, the energy level in the room is through the roof. Even a complete newbie to hypnosis will be equipped with the power to drop people into hypnosis in an instant. If you get the chance to study with Rory in person, don’t miss out on the opportunity.

Attended a rapid induction course delivered by Rory which was very engaging. Rare to attend a course as a complete novice and leave with confidence and skill. Still smiling about the fun and engaging day. His skills have to be seen/experienced, to be believed. Personable and professional alongside a lighthearted sense of fun as & when appropriate. I have also read a couple of his books that are easy to read in clear plain language. I can’t rate him highly enough. Impressive!

Very often hypnotherapy trainers come...
Very often hypnotherapy trainers come in dull and staid forms or, more often than should be the case, they're sadly ill-equipped to perform hypnotherapy themselves, let alone train others to do it ethically. Rory is one of the few trainers that is none of the above; knowledgable and skilled in hypnosis & hypnotherapy, and interesting and innovative enough that you don't find yourself nodding off and drooling during one of his courses, Rory's courses are a must if you want to be successful!

Rapid Induction Training

Rapid induction training is one of the things that Rory Z is best known for, and for good reason!

Rapid induction hypnosis techniques are an invaluable tool for anyone using hypnosis or hypnotherapy. Being able to hypnotise people fast using instant and rapid inductions is a skill that anyone can learn, and the benefits are huge! Rapid inductions allow hypnotherapists to streamline their therapy sessions, and they’re also fantastically entertaining for use in stage and street hypnosis.

Rory has been teaching rapid hypnotic inductions since 2013, and is an expert in the art of hypnotising people fast! With the best-rated rapid induction guidebook on Amazon, and a range of other rapid induction training options available, if you’re looking to master the art of rapid inductions, Rory is the go-to guy. They don’t call him the ‘rapid induction guru’ for nothing!

Hypnosis and Rapid induction training FAQS

Hypnosis is a state of highly focused attention, with both reduced conscious activity and an increase in subconscious acceptance of suggestion. The state of hypnosis is generated internally, in the mind, and whilst the process of hypnotising is often performed by a hypnotist or hypnotherapist, all hypnosis is actually ‘self-hypnosis’. The person being hypnotised must allow themselves to enter into a hypnotic state in order for hypnosis to be achieved. Hypnosis, when performed by a hypnotist or hypnotherapist, is therefore a ‘collaborative’ process, rather than something that is ‘done to’ somebody, and people cannot be hypnotised against their will.

There are many exaggerated and inaccurate portrayals of hypnosis out there, mostly where hypnosis is featured in films and books. Often the media sensationalise hypnosis, as it makes for good entertainment, yet they frequently show hypnosis to be something that it is not (such as ‘mind control’). To learn more about some of the common myths about hypnosis, check out our blog on the topic.

At the Rory Z Hypnosis Academy, we do our best to educate people about what hypnosis is, how it works, and what people can expect from a hypnosis or hypnotherapy session. So, for more information about what hypnosis actually is, we have a blog on the topic that goes into much more detail. You can read it here.

Hypnosis is a completely natural state, and it feels amazing. It’s like when you get into a good book or movie, and everything else takes a back seat – kind of like ‘tunnel vision’. Hypnosis can also feel a bit like the moment before you fall asleep or wake up in the morning, where you’re aware, but not fully conscious of what’s going on around you.

As hypnosis is a ‘self-generated state’, the ‘feeling’ of hypnosis is quite subjective, and experiences can vary from person to person. Many people who experience hypnosis report feelings of deep relaxation and focus. Sometimes the mind can wander when in hypnosis, and at other times, you can be completely focused on the hypnotic suggestions being given by the hypnotist or hypnotherapist.

To experience what hypnosis feels like for you, Rory has created a fantastic hypnosis experience that you can use right now, for free. Check it out here.

Just like any practical skill, it is entirely possible to learn hypnosis, in fact, it can even be easy! To become a hypnotist, you need to learn the theory behind hypnosis, as well as the practical skills required to hypnotise people. It is similar to learning to drive; you need to understand what to do in order to drive your car safely and effectively, but you also need to know the rules of the road, what all the road signs mean, and how to take care of your car!

There are many different ways that you can learn hypnosis. Many people start by reading a good hypnosis book, or watching hypnosis training videos online. However, to truly learn the practical skills of hypnosis, there’s no better option than taking a live hypnosis training course. Learning from an experienced hypnosis trainer and getting real-world practice is integral to developing your hypnosis skills and mastering the art of hypnosis.

If you’re ready to learn hypnosis right now, we have some fantastic training options available. Scroll down below this FAQs section, and you’ll find links to our rapid hypnosis books, online training and live rapid induction courses. If you’d like to learn hypnotherapy so that you can help people with hypnosis, keep scrolling down to the hypnotherapy section.

The short answer to this question is, yes, anyone can become a hypnotist! Hypnotism and the ability to hypnotise is not a ‘special gift’ nor is it a magic power. You don’t have to be ‘born with it’, it is something that almost anyone is able to learn, and learning to hypnotise is actually relatively easy. It’s the stuff you do once you’ve got people hypnotised that takes a little bit longer to learn, such as hypnotherapy techniques and stage hypnosis routines!

We have had people from all ages, races, genders, and backgrounds attend our rapid induction hypnosis training courses. Rory has taught rapid hypnosis to lorry drivers, doctors, hypnotherapists, stage hypnotists, bloggers, waiters, bakers, refuse collectors, psychologists, magicians, mentalists, complementary therapists, NLP practitioners, students, retirees, and the list goes on…

Anyone can learn to hypnotise, and when you’ve trained with the Rory Z Hypnosis Academy, you will be able to hypnotise people!

Pretty much everyone can be hypnotised, yet some people are naturally more hypnotisable and suggestible than others. Almost all people are hypnotically responsive enough to benefit from visiting a hypnotherapist, and will easily enter a state of hypnosis, though the ‘depth’ of hypnotic trance people experience can vary from person to person. Generally, a deep state of hypnosis (known as somnambulism) is not required during a hypnotherapy session. Therefore, the majority of the population can significantly benefit from hypnosis and hypnotherapy. Although a small percentage of people do not respond as well to ‘formal hypnosis’, a well-trained hypnotherapist will also have been taught the skills required to help less hypnotically-responsive clients during a hypnotherapy session too, using more ‘conversational hypnosis’ and NLP-type approaches.

Around 20-30% of all human beings on the planet are highly hypnotisable and highly suggestible. These people are the ones who will often be chosen to volunteer at a stage hypnosis show, as they are quickly able to enter a deep ‘somnambulistic’ hypnotic state, and can respond to deep-trance phenomena almost instantly. This is very helpful when a stage or street hypnotist has a volunteer forget their name, or hallucinate during a hypnosis performance. Interestingly, you do not need to be a highly responsive hypnotic subject in order to become a fantastic hypnotist or hypnotherapist.

A great way to test how suggestible someone is, is by using hypnotic suggestibility tests. That’s why, on all of our courses, Rory teaches suggestibility testing as standard! To learn more about suggestibility tests, check out our blog on the topic.

Is it easy to hypnotise someone? Well, it depends on a number of different elements, including; the suggestibility and hypnotisability of the person you’re trying to hypnotise, what you’re aiming to do during the hypnosis session, the environment you’re in, and a whole bunch of other influencing factors. However, assuming the person wants to be hypnotised and they’re happy to engage in the hypnosis session, it will often be very easy to hypnotise them. In fact, some people can be hypnotised with just a couple of words, or even a gesture!

One of the quickest, and therefore easiest ways to hypnotise people is to learn rapid inductions. As the rapid induction hypnosis process is very quick, this makes it even easier to hypnotise people, as opposed to using more traditional ‘progressive’ hypnotic inductions, which can sometimes take upwards of twenty minutes, and require a lot of talking!

In order to ensure it’s as easy as possible to learn to hypnotise someone, you need to make sure that your hypnosis trainer can teach you in a way that is easy to understand and replicate. With our rapid hypnosis training courses, every stage of the process is broken down, and delivered simply, so that you can immediately and successfully practice the techniques that are taught. For more information on our rapid induction training, scroll down to check out our books, online courses and live training options!

Rapid inductions (sometimes known as instant inductions, instant hypnosis, shock inductions, confusion inductions, fast inductions, speed hypnosis, etc.) are simply methods of getting people into a state of hypnosis as fast as possible.

A lot of hypnotherapists use slow ‘progressive relaxation’ inductions to create a state of hypnosis. These inductions can take anything from a few minutes to twenty minutes or more! Using rapid inductions, you are able to create a state of hypnosis in as little as a few seconds!

As mentioned above, anyone can learn rapid inductions, and you can use rapid inductions in any situation, whether with hypnotherapy clients, or during stage and street hypnosis performances. Rapid inductions are a fantastic tool that every hypnotist and hypnotherapist should have at their disposal.

If you’d like to speed up your hypnosis process and learn to hypnotise fast, we can point you in the right direction. We have a number of different rapid induction hypnosis training options available. Scroll down to below this FAQs section for more information!

A hypnotic induction is simply a method of hypnotising somebody. Rapid inductions achieve this a lot faster than standard hypnotic inductions (the type that a lot of hypnotherapists use), and can put someone into hypnosis quickly, or even ‘instantly’. This is why the terms rapid induction and instant induction are often used interchangeably.

Rapid induction hypnosis works using the principles of shock, confusion and the interruption of unconscious patterns. When hypnotising somebody using a rapid induction, the aim is to completely occupy their conscious thought processes, in order to then deliver an irresistible suggestion for them to go into hypnosis, or to “sleep”. The word ‘sleep’ is frequently used during rapid inductions as it is quick, percussive, and people expect a hypnotist to tell them to sleep. Interestingly though, hypnosis is not sleep. We talk more about that in our ‘hypnosis myths’ blog. So, rapid hypnotic induction methods are specifically designed to very quickly create a state of confusion or shock, and then to transition the subject into a deep state of hypnosis using direct suggestions (such as ‘sleep’). The majority of rapid inductions are physical in nature, and involve handshakes and arm-pulls to create the shocked or confused state.

Instant and rapid inductions can take anything from one minute down to as little as a couple of seconds to complete. As such, a rapid induction is, by far, the fastest possible way to hypnotise someone. If you’d like to learn how to use rapid inductions to hypnotise people in just a couple of seconds, check out our rapid induction training options below.

There are many different methods of creating or inducing a state of hypnosis, some of which involve the hypnotist using their hands. With rapid induction especially, the hypnotist or hypnotherapist frequently uses his hands in order to engage with the client during the hypnotic induction process. Some hand-based hypnotic inductions include; the ‘magnetic hands’ induction, the ‘hand drop’ induction, ‘arm pull’ inductions, and the ‘handshake interrupt’ induction.

Other, more traditional, hypnotic inductions can also make use of the hands, such as with an ‘eye fixation’ induction. Instead of having somebody ‘look into your eyes’, a hypnotist may have a subject focus on their hand, in order to generate hypnosis in this way.

If you’d like to learn some hand-based hypnotic inductions, check out our rapid induction training options below.

Hypnotherapy Training

There are many different hypnotherapy training courses out there. With Rory Z, hypnotherapy training is comprehensive, practical, fun, and comes from a place of true experience.

Hypnotherapy is both a skill and an art. As a hypnotherapist, you will be able to help people make significant changes in their lives. From smoking to weight management, phobias, stress, anxiety and much more, hypnotherapy is a truly flexible career choice. It gives you the ability to be your own boss and make a great living, whilst making a real difference in the world.

To become a professional hypnotherapist takes the right kind of training, and requires a teacher who has real-world hypnotherapy experience. Rory has worked as a hypnotherapist, helping clients to achieve their therapy goals, and started all the way back in 2005. It is this practical knowledge of hypnotherapy that makes our hypnotherapy training second-to-none!

Hypnotherapy training FAQS

Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis techniques alongside various different therapy approaches, including; behavioural therapy, cognitive therapy, analytical therapy, regression therapy, Ericksonian hypnotherapy and clinical hypnotherapy approaches. A professional hypnotherapist will use this range of hypnosis and therapy approaches during a hypnotherapy session to help clients to reduce their problem and symptoms, and move towards a positive goal.

Many other ‘talking therapies’ involve a lot of conversations, and conscious processing. This is why talking therapies such as counselling and psychotherapy usually require a larger number of sessions, and take more time for clients to progress beyond their problems. In contrast, hypnotherapy is used to create positive, measurable changes in behaviours, habits, thoughts, emotions and beliefs, on a subconscious level. By ‘bypassing’ the conscious mind, a hypnotherapist can often help a client in just a couple of sessions, and sometimes in a single session!

If you’d like to become a hypnotherapist and learn hypnotherapy with us at the Rory Z Hypnosis Academy, we have a number of hypnotherapy training options available. Scroll down below the FAQs section to check them out!

Hypnotherapy works by creating powerful subconscious changes. The reason that hypnotherapy is highly effective, is due to the fact that the changes happen subconsciously (sometimes known as ‘unconsciously’). In hypnosis, we are much more open to the acceptance of suggestion, and able to easily integrate new habits, beliefs, and ways of responding in challenging situations. Hypnosis allows our conscious mind to temporarily ‘take a back seat’, meaning that hypnotherapy clients are able to disconnect from any critical conscious blocks that are standing in the way of their progress.

One of the pioneers of modern hypnotherapy, Dr Milton H. Erickson, suggested that our subconscious mind wants what’s best for us. This is true, even when clients are consciously sabotaging themselves. With hypnotherapy, we enable a client’s subconscious mind to create powerful, long-lasting changes. Using hypnosis alongside a range of different therapy approaches and techniques, it can take as little as a single hypnotherapy session to help a client to resolve their problem. Unlike other talking therapies and psychotherapies, hypnotherapy does not usually require a large number of sessions. Nor do hypnotherapists rely on long, drawn-out and often challenging or uncomfortable client conversations. Instead, a hypnotherapist will put a client into hypnosis, and give them suggestions relating to overcoming their problem and reaching their goal.

To learn more about how hypnotherapy works, as well as the different types of therapy approaches a professional hypnotherapist may use, check out this blog on the topic.

Hypnotherapy is a truly flexible therapy, and can help with almost any problem you can think of. Hypnotherapy is commonly used to help people with; smoking cessation, weight management, stress reduction, anxieties, phobias, pain, insomnia, nail biting (and other unwanted habits), sexual issues, depression (and other emotional issues), sports performance, limiting or unhealthy beliefs, and the list goes on.

As hypnotherapists ourselves, when working with clients, we do not work with ‘labels’ and we do not offer ‘cures’. Instead, we focus on helping clients to reduce their unwanted symptoms, whether physical, psychological, or both. As well as working to resolve the presenting problem and symptoms, we work from a ‘solution-focused’ perspective. This involves giving clients resources that enable them to reach their therapy goals, and teaching them how to maintain their success in the long-term. This holistic, client-centred approach means that a professional hypnotherapist will be able to significantly help clients with almost any problem. There are, however, some conditions where we suggest hypnotherapy may not be the best or safest option.

The conditions that we do not recommend hypnotherapy for include; significant mental health disorders, such as bipolar, psychosis and personality disorders, as well as those conditions that require specialist treatment, including drug addiction and dependence, anorexia, and bulimia. It is true that hypnotherapy can help with these conditions, however, the majority of hypnotherapists do not have the specialist training or experience required to work safely with complex issues such as these. Hypnotherapy for these conditions often must be planned and delivered whilst liaising with any other medical or therapy professionals and care teams the client is engaged with, as the wrong approach could cause more damage than good.

If you’d like to become a hypnotherapist, it is important to learn to work safely with clients, and also to learn when (and why) it may be safer to not work with specific conditions. However, with the exception of the conditions mentioned in the previous paragraph, a hypnotherapist is free to work with the vast majority of clients and conditions! So, if you’d like to become a professional, solution-focused hypnotherapist, check out our popular hypnotherapy training options below.

Yes, anyone can learn hypnotherapy. We have taught hypnotherapy to people of all ages, from teenagers to retirees, and from many different countries and backgrounds. There are no prerequisites required to become a hypnotherapist. You do not need any previous psychology training or related therapy experience or qualifications, because a good hypnotherapy course will teach you everything that you need to know in order to perform hypnotherapy safely and effectively.

In order to learn hypnotherapy, it’s important that you are able to sufficiently engage in training, and can understand the theory behind hypnotherapy, as well as learning the practical skills. As such, to make sure learning hypnotherapy is the right choice for you, we recommend first checking out a good hypnotherapy book before joining a course. You can check out Rory’s comprehensive hypnotherapy book, ‘The Beginner’s Guide to Hypnotherapy’, using the link below this FAQs section. Otherwise, if you’re ready to take a hypnotherapy course, our live and online course details are linked below too!

To become a hypnotherapist requires a couple of different things. Firstly, you need to learn the ‘theory’. It’s important that you learn how hypnotherapy works, and get a solid foundation of hypnotherapy knowledge, before you begin using hypnotherapy. As with any truly skilled professionals, the best hypnotherapists have a deep understanding of what they’re doing, as well as why they’re doing it. This theoretical knowledge allows you to practice hypnotherapy both confidently and effectively.

As well as learning hypnotherapy theory, it’s also important to learn about the different conditions that your clients may come for hypnotherapy with, and what to do in order to address them in the therapy session. On any good hypnotherapy course you will learn about weight issues, smoking, stress, anxiety, depression, pain and phobias, as a bare minimum.

Next, you’ll be learning the practical techniques and skills required to deliver life-changing hypnotherapy sessions. Hypnotherapy is not quite as simple as just ‘hypnotising someone and telling them to do things differently’. There are a vast range of different hypnosis and hypnotherapy techniques available to you, and a practical understanding of how these techniques work is integral to your success as a hypnotherapist. As an example, on our own hypnotherapy course, we teach our students; various hypnotic inductions, deepeners, suggestibility tests, hypnotherapy metaphors, anchoring, parts therapy, the fast phobia cure, hypnotic regression approaches, pain removal techniques, and much, much more. By learning a comprehensive range of hypnotherapy techniques and approaches during your hypnotherapy practitioner training, you will be able to confidently work with the different types of hypnotherapy clients you’re likely to see during your career as a professional hypnotherapist.

Finally, during your training you will need the opportunity to practice all of the skills you learn on your hypnotherapy course. It’s one thing to watch and read about hypnotherapy techniques, but the real learning happens when you put them into practice yourself! So, make sure that whichever hypnotherapy training course you choose, you get the opportunity to engage in a lot of practice!

At the Rory Z Hypnosis Academy, our hypnotherapy training has been strategically designed to give you the very best foundation in both the practical skills and theoretical knowledge required to become a successful hypnotherapist. Our hypnotherapy diploma course is also highly practical, meaning you will quickly develop confidence using hypnotherapy during the course – in fact, we get you practicing right away on day one! For more information about how you can become a hypnotherapist with us, check out the full course details and upcoming dates using the button below this FAQs section.

The time it takes to learn hypnotherapy depends on a couple of different factors. Firstly, the duration of your training, and secondly the amount of practice that you engage in. If getting started ASAP is your key focus, you can learn enough to start practicing hypnotherapy techniques by reading hypnotherapy books and using online hypnotherapy training courses. However, to become a professional hypnotherapist and to run your own successful hypnotherapy business, you need to engage in a high quality hypnotherapy course.

If you’ve started looking for hypnotherapy training, it is likely you have already realised that there are many different hypnotherapy courses and training options out there. Some hypnotherapy courses are short in duration, taking less than a week to complete. Others are spread over a much longer timeframe. There are pros and cons to either course duration option. However, to get started as a hypnotherapist sooner, rather than later, a shorter, more intensive training option is usually the best solution – so long as it is supported by ongoing training resources and mentoring!

Our hypnotherapy diploma course is five days in duration, and is also supported by comprehensive online (video) training as well as additional training and development events. Not only that, but you also have the option to engage in one-to-one hypnotherapy mentoring and supervision with Rory after you complete the course. An intensive course alone is often not sufficient to get a comprehensive and practical understanding of hypnotherapy. That’s why, at the Rory Z Hypnosis Academy, we’ve developed a powerful blend of intensive live hypnotherapy training (in person), supported by online learning and a huge library of invaluable hypnotherapy resources. This means, not only can you get started in your career as a hypnotherapist quickly, but you will also get a depth of training far exceeding the majority of other hypnotherapy training courses out there (even the ones that take months to complete)!

For full details about our hypnotherapy training courses, as well as our other hypnotherapy training options, scroll down to below this FAQs section.

If you want to help people whilst making a great living, hypnotherapy is a fantastic career choice. As a professional hypnotherapist, you can earn a five or even six-figure income, whilst making a significant difference in your client’s lives. Even without the financial benefits of becoming a hypnotherapist, the work itself is hugely rewarding.

If you’re looking to ‘give something back’, and spend your time helping others, a career in hypnotherapy is a great choice. Not only can you help people in your local area, but you will also be able to work with international clients online! With modern technology, this flexibility in how you work with clients enables you to help the people who need it the most, regardless of your physical location in the world. It also enables you to create a thriving business that will support you financially for years to come.

As a hypnotherapist, you become your own boss. A career in hypnotherapy allows you to set your own fee, and to work with as many clients as you like. The ‘going rate’ for a hypnotherapy session is between £75-150 per session. Even if you only worked with 5 clients a week at £75 per session, you’d be earning £19,500 per year! To get a better idea about what you can earn as a hypnotherapist, check out our hypnotherapy income calculator.

In the UK, as well as in many other countries around the world, you do not need a specific qualification in order to practice as a hypnotherapist. In fact, in the UK, you can practice as a hypnotherapist with no qualifications whatsoever. Though this makes hypnotherapy a very accessible career option, as a student hypnotherapist, you must ensure that your initial training is comprehensive and teaches you everything you need in order to practice hypnotherapy safely and effectively.

There are some organisations that promote specific ‘training standards’ for hypnotherapists, such as the CNHC, with the UK Core Curriculum for hypnotherapy. However, this is known as ‘voluntary regulation’, and is not mandatory for hypnotherapists, nor is it required in order to become a professional hypnotherapist in the UK. In reality, to become a good hypnotherapist, quality and depth of training should be the main focus when you’re looking for a hypnotherapy course.

As hypnotherapy training is unregulated in the UK, training standards can range from very good, to abysmally poor. This can be true regardless of the cost or duration of hypnotherapy training courses – it all comes down to the knowledge, experience and teaching skills of your chosen hypnotherapy trainer. There are some schools out there who advertise that they teach to the UK Core Curriculum standards, and who offer recognised ‘level 4 hypnotherapy diplomas’ (usually at a very high course cost). However, even with the Core Curriculum ‘training standards’ and seemingly prestigious qualifications, we have spoken with many students who have taken these long and expensive courses, who didn’t get what they were expecting. In fact, many were still not confident to work as hypnotherapists, and couldn’t hypnotise clients without a hypnosis script, even after having invested thousands of pounds in their initial training! So, a long course duration and a Core Curriculum-led course syllabus does not necessarily equate to a high standard of hypnotherapy training!

At the Rory Z Hypnosis Academy, we have re-trained many hypnotherapists who have taken other, less comprehensive and less practical hypnotherapy courses, as well as teaching absolute beginners. We’re truly passionate about teaching hypnotherapy, and when you complete your hypnotherapy training with us, your skills, knowledge and confidence will be high, and you can get started helping people immediately! To learn more about our practitioner-level hypnotherapy training, scroll down to the ‘hypnotherapy diploma course’ button below.

Hypnotherapy is not the same as hypnosis, although hypnotherapy does rely on the use of hypnosis. Because of this, the terms hypnotherapy and hypnosis are often confused and/or used interchangeably by the general public.

The term ‘hypnosis‘, quite simply, relates to a the process of being hypnotised. So, when somebody is hypnotised, they are entering the state of hypnosis.

To understand the term ‘hypnotherapy‘, it’s easiest to split the word in half; hypno/therapy. So, hypnosis + therapy = hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapists use hypnosis techniques to hypnotise a client. Then, once hypnotised, a hypnotherapist will use specific therapy techniques in order to help the client resolve their issues. Hypnosis, in-and-of itself, is not therapeutic, although it can be very relaxing. In order for it to be classified as hypnotherapy, the process must involve both hypnosis and therapy techniques.

So, hypnosis is the state a person enters when they are hypnotised. Then, whatever happens after the person is hypnotised, defines what the overall process is called. If a person is hypnotised for therapy purposes, it is hypnotherapy. If a person is hypnotised on stage at a ‘hypnosis show’, this would be called ‘comedy hypnosis’ or ‘stage hypnosis’ (not ‘stage hypnotherapy’, as there is no therapy element involved). However, if someone is just hypnotised for the sake of being hypnotised, then it would simply be called ‘hypnosis’.

At the end of the day, the terms used by the general public when talking about hypnotherapy don’t matter too much. However, as a hypnotherapist, it is a good idea to understand the difference!

NLP is not the same as hypnotherapy, however there are many similarities and crossovers between the two modalities. NLP, or ‘neuro-linguistic programming’ was created in the 1970’s. One of the key purposes of NLP is to enhance communication, whether interpersonally, or to modify the ways that we communicate with ourselves, for personal development.

The creators of NLP modelled their approaches on a number of different therapy experts of the time, including renowned clinical hypnosis expert, Dr Milton H. Erickson – a key figure in modern hypnotherapy. As such, there is a lot of crossover between the therapy techniques used within hypnotherapy and NLP.

One of the key differences between modern NLP training and hypnotherapy training, is that NLP relies much less on hypnosis (although it is taught, albeit briefly, on the majority of NLP courses). However, many techniques taught on NLP courses are also taught on a good hypnotherapy course, such as; anchoring, parts therapy, future pacing, working with representational systems, submodality shifts, the fast phobia cure, and many more. Interestingly, these techniques often give much better results when used within hypnosis, during a hypnotherapy session!

At the Rory Z Hypnosis Academy, our hypnotherapy training draws from various different therapy modalities, including NLP. Rory Z is a Master NLP Practitioner, as well as an experienced hypnotherapist. So, with our training, you get the best of both worlds! To learn more, check out our training options below.

Stage and street hypnosis training FAQS

Stage hypnosis is the use of hypnosis for entertainment purposes. A stage hypnosis show consists of a ‘stage hypnotist’ selecting volunteers from the audience to get hypnotised. During the stage hypnosis show, hypnotised participants are given hypnotic suggestions to experience various different things (thoughts, feelings and hallucinations), all with the aim of entertaining the audience. A professional stage hypnotist will always ensure that hypnotised volunteers are treated respectfully, and that they have a great time on stage during the show too!

Stage hypnosis shows often happen at weddings, parties, private events, corporate events, pubs, clubs and there are even some full theatre shows too! There are hundreds of stage hypnotists all around the world who perform hypnosis shows of all shapes and sizes. There are even stage hypnotists who perform shows on luxury ocean cruise liners and in huge theatres in Las Vegas!

If you’d like to learn a bit more about how a stage hypnosis show works, check out our books, online training and live stage hypnosis training courses below!

Stage hypnosis is 100% real, and is a popular form of entertainment for both public and private events.

Some people believe that stage hypnosis is ‘fake’. This idea may have come about for a number of reasons. The most likely reason is because many people who volunteer for stage hypnosis shows are turned away, as they are not hypnotically responsive enough. To participate in a stage hypnosis show, volunteers need to be highly hypnotisable and suggestible. That’s why a stage hypnotist will use suggestibility tests in order to select the best volunteers for the show. Sometimes low-suggestible people ‘slip through the net’, and don’t respond particularly well during the stage hypnosis show, meaning the hypnotist will focus more on those participants who are responding well. Those ‘low-responders’ may feel that hypnosis ‘didn’t work on them’, which may lead them to assume the other participants were ‘faking it’, when, in fact, they were likely just better hypnotic subjects.

Another common misconception about stage hypnosis shows, is that stage hypnotists use ‘stooges’ or ‘plants’ (people pretending to be hypnotised). Though it is possible that this could happen, it’s highly unlikely. As mentioned above, a stage hypnotist will pick volunteers from the audience. As stage hypnosis shows happen at weddings, schools, and other private events, all of the attendees know each other. If a stage hypnotist brought a bunch of random stooges along to their shows, and didn’t hypnotise people who were familiar to the audience, the audience would be pretty annoyed, and stage hypnosis shows definitely wouldn’t be as popular as they are!

So, yes, stage hypnosis is real, and is constantly growing in popularity as an entertainment option for many events. If you’d like to become a stage hypnotist, check out our training options below this FAQs section.

Stage hypnosis works, quite simply, by hypnotising volunteers, and giving them powerful hypnotic suggestions to respond in a certain (entertaining) way. As mentioned in the FAQ above, a stage hypnotist will pick the most suggestible and hypnotisable volunteers to participate in a stage hypnosis show. Many people who are highly responsive to hypnosis will quickly accept and follow a stage hypnotists suggestions. Unfortunately, not everyone is an ideal candidate for participating in a stage hypnosis show. Selecting the best participants, therefore, is something that is taught very early on during stage hypnosis training.

All of the fun stuff you see on stage during a stage hypnosis show is caused using ‘direct suggestion’. When hypnotised, volunteers are told how they will respond, and these suggestions temporarily become their absolute reality. During a stage hypnosis show, the hypnotist will often gradually increase the complexity of the ‘routines’, so that volunteers start off easy, before progressing to more complex routines that require deeper hypnotic trance and phenomena, such as eyes-open hallucinations (e.g. seeing the audience naked).

Being hypnotised on stage by a professional stage hypnotist is a fantastic experience. In fact, most people who volunteer to participate in a stage hypnosis show have a better time than those people enjoying the show from the audience! Although stage hypnosis volunteers are often given suggestions to move around and engage in the show, the hypnosis experience is actually deeply relaxing and very enjoyable.

Hypnotised volunteers are often aware of what they’re doing during a hypnosis show, and always have the option to not participate, or even to wake themselves up, if they wanted to. However, being hypnotised at a stage hypnosis show can free people from their inhibitions (to some extent), allowing them to relax and have a great time whilst up on stage.

Professional stage hypnotists will often end the hypnosis show by giving the volunteers a number of positive, feel-good suggestions, meaning that even after the show has ended, that amazing feeling continues for the rest of the day/evening.

Street hypnosis is very similar to stage hypnosis (see above), in that a street hypnotist’s aim is to entertain with hypnosis. However, street hypnosis is performed in random locations, and the performance is usually much quicker than the duration of a stage hypnosis show, with street hypnosis demos taking around 5-10 minutes, as opposed to the 45-90 minute stage hypnosis shows.

Street hypnotists perform out on the streets, as the name suggests, but also in parks, clubs, homes, and anywhere else you can think of! You will most often see street hypnotists hypnotising a single person, or two people during street hypnosis demos, rather than having a large number of participants, which is more common for stage performances. However, street hypnotists use the same fundamental skills and routines as a stage hypnotist during street hypnosis demonstrations. So, to learn street hypnosis, you will need to learn the same core-skills as the stage hypnotist. Check out the stage and street hypnosis training options below that will help you get started learning street hypnosis skills.

Street hypnosis works in a very similar way to stage hypnosis. People are selected for their ‘hypnotic responsiveness’ using hypnotic suggestibility testing. Then, they are hypnotised and given direct suggestions for how to respond during the hypnosis demonstration. Street hypnosis demonstrations often use similar routines and hypnotic phenomena as you’d see in a stage hypnosis show, such as; sensory hallucinations, catalepsy, amnesia and hallucinations, as well as simple ‘triggered responses’.

The key differences between street hypnosis and stage hypnosis are the locations and duration of performances. Street hypnosis is often performed in random locations, indoors and outdoors, and street hypnosis demonstrations only tend to last for a few minutes – you can think of it almost like ‘hypnotic busking’.

Street hypnosis is a fantastic way to have a little fun with hypnosis, without having to perform full stage hypnosis shows. It’s also a great way to promote a hypnotherapy practice – many prospective clients want hypnotherapists to “show them something”, and street hypnosis training gives you both the skills and confidence to demonstrate hypnosis in any environment! Learn more about our street hypnosis training options below this FAQs section.

Stage hypnosis and hypnotherapy are two very different disciplines. The focus of stage hypnosis is to entertain an audience. Whereas, the focus of hypnotherapy is to help clients to overcome their problems and reach their goals. Another difference is, stage hypnosis relies on working with the most hypnotically suggestible volunteers in order to put on a great hypnosis show. In contrast, a well-trained hypnotherapist can work with the majority of the population, as hypnotic suggestibility is not quite as important during a hypnotherapy session. In fact, most people can benefit significantly from a hypnotherapy session!

Both stage hypnotists and hypnotherapists may use similar techniques in order to hypnotise people, but once hypnotised, that’s where things become very different. A stage hypnotist will use ‘direct hypnotic suggestions‘ in order to change the reality and responses of their volunteers, leading to entertaining comedy hypnosis routines and skits. Hypnotherapists will use a variety of different techniques, drawn from psychotherapy and other talking and complementary therapies, in order to effect change.

To become a stage hypnotist or street hypnotist requires a solid foundation of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. It is then important to get a lot of practice in order to fully refine and master stage and street hypnosis skills.

When Rory Z set out to learn stage hypnosis, he began by reading hypnosis books (of which there weren’t many at the time!). More recently, Rory has written his own book on the topic, ‘The Stage and Street Hypnosis Handbook’, which is widely read by stage and street hypnotists all over the world. It is even recommended by top international stage hypnotists. As such, it is a fantastic place to start your own stage and street hypnosis journey!

After you understand the theory, it’s then important to see stage and street hypnosis in action, and to get hands-on practice. Online and in-person stage and street hypnosis courses, therefore, are the next step. A blended-learning and highly practical approach to stage and street hypnosis training works great, and will give you everything you need to get started as a stage or street hypnotist.

If you’re ready to get the ball rolling, check out our stage and street hypnosis training books, online training and live course options below this FAQs section.

Anyone can become a stage hypnotist or street hypnotist. We have taught these skills to people of all ages (from students to retirees) and from many different countries and backgrounds. However, there are some personal qualities that work great with comedy hypnosis performances, whether on stage or in the street.

Firstly, and most importantly, by properly learning and practicing street and stage hypnosis skills, you will develop confidence in your abilities. This confidence is integral to performing entertainment hypnosis effectively. As a stage and street hypnotist, if you are not confident, your volunteers will pick up on it, and this can negatively influence their response to the hypnosis process. During our training, you will naturally develop confidence in your abilities. The more you practice, the more confident and experienced you will become!

Next, a good sense of humour is definitely an asset to a ‘comedy hypnotist’. You don’t need any formal comedy training or experience, but it helps if you have the ability to ‘have fun’. When coming up with a hypnosis show or street hypnosis routine, it needs to be entertaining, and this is mostly down to the suggestions given by the hypnotist. If you don’t have a great sense of humour or the knack for saying funny things, this too is a skill that can be developed along with your stage and street hypnosis skills!

As well as making routines entertaining and funny, a stage and street hypnotist also needs to be flexible, knowing how to react to unexpected situations that happen during stage hypnosis routines or street hypnosis skits. Unlike many hypnotherapists, stage hypnotists do not use scripts, as the reactions of volunteers can change the direction of a routine in an instant. Flexibility, and the ability to ‘think on your feet’ is something that can be learned, and that will naturally develop as you learn and practice your stage and street hypnosis skills.

You can learn stage hypnosis and street hypnosis skills from a book, and put them into practice straight away. So, you could actually start practicing today if you wanted to! However, to truly master stage and street hypnosis takes a little more time and practice.

The amount of time it will take you to learn stage and street hypnosis can vary depending on your natural proficiency – as with anything, some people naturally find it easier to perform hypnosis easier than others. However, it mostly depends on the amount of practice that you put in during the ‘early days’. Those people who learn stage and street hypnosis skills, whether from a book, video or live course, and then don’t get any practice, will not master the art until they start actively using and refining the skills they have learnt. Whereas, those people who really get stuck in, and practice at every given opportunity, will quickly become experts at performing stage and street hypnosis.

During our street and stage hypnosis training, as practice is so important, we teach you how to get practice in a way that is comfortable and workable for you, as well as getting lots of practice during the course itself!
